Trauma
We hear the word “trauma” used a lot these days, but what actually is trauma?
Trauma is not the actual event or situation that happened, trauma is your mind and body’s struggle to process any traumatic event or situation. When something becomes too overwhelming for us to handle, we move into survival mode, and the hemispheres of the brain and the body split from one another to avoid complete shutdown. We are wired to work this way!
However, after the event is over, the two hemispheres and the body don’t all come back online to process the event in the same way which is why some people can speak about an event with no emotion, but may have emotional outbursts or flashbacks without being able to verbalize the experience.
My goal with any type of trauma work is to safely, gently, bring everything back together so your brain and body can process the event and you can rebuild your life in a more meaningful way.
Types of Trauma Support I Offer
Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy can be incredibly useful in understanding and validating your experience as well as reducing shame and guilt associated with the event. As a therapist, I work slowly and gently, and we go at your own pace. I aim to have a compassionate, non-judgmental ear. If it feels safe and appropriate, we may incorporate sensations in the body and gentle breathing exercises as well. More about EMDR can be found here.
TCTSY Trauma Sensitive Yoga
Traumatic events involve loss of autonomy and control over the self. TCTSY is a clinical intervention that gently re-establishes the body as a safe space and restores your autonomy over your own being. This supports healing from complex trauma, developmental trauma or chronic, treatment-resistant post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Trauma Sensitive Yoga uses invitational language to offer options for shapes and movement; there is no right or wrong way to move in these classes and there are no physical adjustments made. Your internal experience is all that matters. You will never be asked to speak about your experience or reveal your history to your classmates or to me.
EMDR
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a therapy that uses eye movement to activate both hemispheres of the brain to help re-process trauma, difficult memories, and more. EMDR can be done in conjunction with psychotherapy or as specialized sessions. I offer EMDR online and EMDR in Brighton. More about EMDR can be found here.
Trauma Informed Teaching Workshops
With a background in teaching, and in educational technology I’ve worked with hundreds of schools in 70+ countries. I know the pressures teachers face trying to balance their own wellbeing, while being on the frontline of mental health support for students. My trauma informed teaching workshops provide education, support, and practical ways of working to support teachers as they support their students. These can be tailored to your school’s needs.
Trauma does not have to be a life sentence. You possess the capacity to heal, no matter what has happened to you in the past. I’m here to help that process so you don’t have to go through it alone.
