Trauma Informed Teaching
Teachers today are on the front lines of childhood trauma, witnessing firsthand its impact on students' learning and behavior. Unfortunately, many educators may not feel adequately supported or equipped to address the complex emotional and psychological needs of their students in addition to an already demanding job.
Trauma-informed teaching offers a framework that empowers teachers to respond effectively, creating an environment where all students—especially those who have experienced trauma—can feel safe, understood, and ready to learn. By prioritizing teacher self-care, it also brings some much-needed headspace back to educators to help avoid teacher burnout.
After nearly 20 years in the education industry, I’ve merged my passion for supporting teachers with my commitment to mental health to create transformative trauma-informed teaching workshops that empower educators to make a lasting impact.
Trauma-informed teaching goes beyond simply addressing academic needs—it acknowledges the emotional, mental, and social factors that may influence a student’s behavior and learning process. This approach is crucial because students who have experienced trauma may struggle with focus, emotional regulation, or building trusting relationships. By providing a consistent, predictable environment that prioritizes safety and understanding, trauma-informed teaching helps break down barriers to learning and supports the emotional well-being of all students.
Incorporating trauma-sensitive strategies in the classroom can foster resilience, improve academic outcomes, and empower students to build the skills they need to succeed—both in school and in life. By embracing trauma-informed practices, educators contribute to a brighter, more inclusive future for every student.
