Intimidated By Yoga? I Was Too!
Curious about yoga, but feeling nervous?
Are you feeling scared to try yoga? I totally get it - starting a new practice can be daunting, especially when it involves moving your body in unfamiliar ways. I was terrified to try out my first class. I didn’t know if I was doing things right, if I wasn’t fit enough or flexible enough, or if they’d just laugh me out of the room.
If you’re feeling like I used to (and sometimes still do, because we all get nervous sometimes), here are a few pointers to help you get moving!
First things first: yoga is for everyone. Don't let the misconception that you need to be flexible or fit hold you back from trying it out. Yoga is a practice that can be adapted to suit your body and your abilities, regardless of age, size, or fitness level. After 15 years, I’m still not very flexible! I can’t to a handstand or full splits (or at least, I can’t yet), and even now sometimes a downward dog feels uncomfortable because I run too much.
If you're feeling nervous about jumping into a more vigorous practice, consider starting with gentle, yin or restorative yoga. These styles focus on slow, mindful movements and relaxation techniques, which can help you build strength and flexibility at your own pace. Plus, they're great for stress relief and emotional well-being.
Speaking of emotional well-being (because we love that here), yoga is also amazing for promoting mindfulness and self-care. By bringing attention to the present moment and cultivating self-awareness, you can reduce stress, develop a deeper connection with yourself, and foster healthier relationships with others.
Speaking of others, do yoga with a friend! If you’re nervous to get started, why not recruit a yoga buddy? Whether it’s yoga online or yoga in a studio, a friend can help ease you in.
Yoga should provide a supportive and non-judgmental community. So find yourself a studio where you feel supported, not intimidated. You don't have to worry about comparing yourself to others or meeting any expectations - just show up, breathe, and be present. I tell my students all the time- you know your body better than I do!
If you’re interested in learning more about how I teach, you can find me on Saturday mornings at Humankind in Brighton, or get in touch. You can find out more about my yoga offerings here!
Looking forward to seeing you on the mat someday!
